Wesak – A Story [2003]

Excerpt: The travelers, in their anxiousness to reach oneness with God atop this mount, and seeing the holiness of this young priest and his companions, say but these words, “You have only but to ask of us and we shall do it.”

Rising, Wesak walks along the massive piles of stones now collected along the sides here. “Look you upon these. Some are of this size,” gesturing to a pile of sizeable boulders, “and all differing sizes, down to …” and he points to a pile of pebbles. “Choose, you, among these then that which you would bear as gifts to God for your journey’s end.”

Again and again, travelers come and the same message is given, and with joyful expectancy, not knowing why a stone would be considered a gift unto God, choose according to their guidance the stones of varying sizes. Some choose such that are so large and so heavy they can barely ascend carrying them. Others choose a handful of pebbles here and there and continue on.
